Before Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries, the most notorious short-lived celebrity marriage was between Britney Spears and Jason Alexander. Alexander, a childhood friend of Spears, married her in a spontaneous Las Vegas ceremony in 2004. Their marriage was annulled 55 hours later, under heavy pressure from the singer's parents and management. Now that Spears is getting ready to walk down the aisle for a third time (with fiance Jason Trawick), Alexander has opened up to 20/20 about his marriage to Spears, and why he regrets letting it end.
"I was in love with her. I feel like she felt the same way," Alexander told 20/20 of his infamous weekend with Spears.
According to Alexander, he and Spears were "friends with benefits" when she visited her hometown of Kentworth, La. -- even when she was dating Justin Timberlake. ("I was kind of like the guy behind the scenes that no one knew about," he brags.) Though he admits that they were very intoxicated when Spears popped the question, he claims he was serious about the marriage -- or at least, he had hopes for the future of their relationship.
That all changed when the story hit the media. Spears' management was furious, especially because she hadn't signed a pre-nuptial agreement. With Britney's cooperation, her team drew up annulment papers, which claimed that Spears "lacked understanding of her actions, to the extent that she was incapable of agreeing to the marriage."
"Bulls***. That was probably the hardest part about it," says Alexander of signing the annulment papers. "I had obviously got my feelings involved.'"
In retrospect, Alexander -- now an aspiring mixed martial arts fighter -- regrets being a "nice guy" and walking away from the marriage without a dime.
"If you are going to really get involved into a relationship with a celebrity and you are just an average Joe, make sure you are thinking business!" he tells the aspiring Jason Alexanders of the world.
While Jason Alexander paints himself as a "nice guy" and a victim in the interview, he also can't help himself from smirking about his "honeymoon" with Britney and their alleged behind-her-boyfriend's-back trysts. He claims that he cared about Britney, but to hear him tell the story, it seems like he mostly cared about bragging rights. And does he seriously think he was entitled to a big payday because he was coerced into a drunken Vegas wedding by a rich girl? Clearly, the guy is not the catch he thinks he is.
Meanwhile, following another bad match with Kevin Federline, Spears, 30, has found a man who treats her well, is great with her kids and is loved by her family. Congrats on your engagement to Jason Trawick, Britney; you've obviously traded up!
