Britney Spears has been doing pretty well lately, personally and professionally -- but it seems like her support system may be starting to crumble yet again. While Spears, 28, has been preparing for her seventh album and amassing record numbers of Twitter followers, the people close to her have become embroiled in lawsuits and scandals -- all centered around the pop star.
First of all, there's "Britneygate": the ongoing legal battle between Britney's mother Lynne Spears and her former manager Sam Lutfi. Lutfi sued Lynne for defamation of character in 2008, after she trashed him in her memoir Through the Storm. Lynne has said that Lutfi manipulated Britney, cutting her off from her family, supplying her with drugs and taking her money. Lutfi claims that Britney was already a mess when he came along, and he was just helping to hold her together. Essentially, each party is blaming the other for Britney's meltdown. A Los Angeles judge ruled last year that the lawsuit could go to trial, but Spears appealed, and now Spears and Lutfi's arguments will be heard by the Court of Appeal of the State of California.
Meanwhile, Spears herself is the object of a potential lawsuit: a former bodyguard is accusing her of sexual harassment. Fernando Flores, 29, told friends that Britney frequently came onto him, and "he felt if he didn't reciprocate he could lose his job." He also said that Britney constantly paraded around the house naked, a complaint made by a different ex-bodyguard in 2007. Flores has taken no legal action but is considering a multimillion-dollar lawsuit.
And recently Star magazine is reporting that Spears' boyfriend Jason Trawick has been two-timing her. Trawick, who stopped being Spears' talent agent after the two hooked up romantically, is allegedly involved in a long-term relationship with his own former assistant. The tabloid claims to have identified the 'other woman,' printing her name, photograph, and "secret emails" from Trawick. Sadly, we're reminded of Spears' relationship with Kevin Federline, which ended soon after tabloids reported that he was cheating.
We hope at least one of these scandals draws quickly to a close; between her mother, management, bodyguards and boyfriend, there ought to be somebody who Spears can actually trust.
