In 2002, Forbes declared Britney Spears "the world's most powerful celebrity" -- but she probably remembers it as the year her parents ended their 30-year marriage. Now, eight years later, People reports that Lynne and Jamie Spears have reconciled. The two were spotted at a Los Angeles club on Saturday, dancing together to their daughter's songs. Although this news is just going public now, they apparently became a couple again last summer.
"They are back together and are doing well and happy," says People's source, who adds that Britney's parents have not remarried.
This is unexpected news, to say the least. The pop princess herself has said that the divorce was "the best thing that's ever happened to my family." In Lynne Spears' 2008 memoir Through the Storm, she described Jamie as an absentee husband with a drinking problem -- although she said that she was still mourning their "lost love" years later.
We wish we knew what changed to make Lynne and Jamie reunite. Is it the fact that Britney has finally gotten back on track and become an independent adult? Does it have something to do with Jamie becoming conservator of Britney's estate, thereby taking responsibility for his daughter for the first time? Maybe raising their grandchildren -- Britney's sons and Jamie Lynn's daughter -- has brought them close as a family again.
Whatever the reason, their story offers a happy ending for a sadly common story: the parents of a famous child star parting ways at the height of their kid's fame. Maybe Miley Cyrus's parents will fall in love again after eight years, too.
