Former 'Today' Anchor Bryant Gumbel Has Cancer

Former TODAY show anchor Bryant Gumbel announced that he was treated for lung cancer on today's episode of Live! With Regis and Kelly.

“They took part of my lung and they took some other goodies,” 61-year-old Bryant told Kelly Ripa about his recent surgery, according to an E! Online report on the news.

Bryant, who is subbing for Regis Philbin while he's out recovering from hip-replacement surgery, shared the details of his treatment after refusing Kelly's offer to dance with him.

“The pathology on most of the stuff came back benign, but enough aggressive cells had escaped the tumor that it warranted some treatment," Gumbel said. “I went through that and it’s done now.”

Not much has been reported about Gumbel's smoking history, but CNN.com noted that the Real Sports host is "a cigar-smoker."
