Burger and Fries Birthday Cake

Directions:

Use the rolled fondant to make the lettuce leaves first so that they can be molded into shape and left to harden. Cut off 9 ounces (about one-quarter) of the fondant and knead in enough green food coloring to turn it pale green. Roll out into ten thin circles, each approximately 3 inches in diameter, with slightly uneven edges. To make the veins of the lettuce, dip a toothpick into some cornstarch and roll it over the fondant, pressing lightly. Frill the edges of the lettuce by rolling a toothpick dipped in cornstarch backward and forward. Lightly scrunch up ten pieces of foil and form each into circle a little smaller than the lettuce leaves. Lay the green fondant over the foil, press down lightly, and allow to harden overnight.

TO MAKE THE BURGERS, cut the Milky Way bars into pieces, put them into a large saucepan together with the chocolate and butter, and melt over low heat, stirring occasionally. Stir in the Rice Krispies until they are well coated. To make the round hamburgers shapes, place a 3-inch biscuit cutter on a large nonstick baking pan.

Spoon the Rice Krispies mixture into the round biscuit cutter to a depth of about 1/4 inch and press down with a teaspoon to lever the surface. Carefully remove the biscuit cutter and repeat with the remaining Rice Krispies mixture to make ten burger shapes, and put these in the fridge to set.

FOR THE BURGER TOPPINGS, cut off another 9 ounces of the fondant and color it red by kneading in some red food coloring. Roll out to a thickness of about ? inch and cut into ten circles using a 2-inch pastry cutter. Cut each in half and use the black writing icing to make little dots of black to resemble the tomato seeds. Cut a slice off the remaining fondant and form into twenty thin slices of onion.

THE TOMATO KETCHUP CONTAINERS are made from the remainder of the white fondant formed into ten small rectangula containers. Fill each of these with 1 teaspoon jam. Add a foil cover, which you can roll back a little to expose the 'ketchup'. Toast the sesame seeds in a dry frying pan until lightly golden.

TO ASSEMBLE EACH BURGER, cut a doughnut in half horizontally and put one half on a paper plate. Place the Rice Krispies burger on one half, arrange a slice of tomato and two onion slices on top, and pipe on a little yellow writing icing for mustard. Then add a lettuce leaf and place the other half of the doughnut on top and sprinkle with a few of the toasted sesame seeds. Cut about one-third off the height of each red paper cup and cut a V-shape out of the center. Crumple some waxed paper in the base of the cup and arrange about nine pound-cake 'fries' in the cup.
