Buy Refurbished Electronics

Buying refurbished can save you a bundle on your gadget gifts. Sites like Cowboom sell refurbished electronics at a huge discount and you still receive a manufacturer warranty -- although it might not be as extensive as one for a new item. Worried about quality control? Don’t be: Many consumers return electronics after opening even though there was nothing wrong with the item, obligating retailers to sell them as “refurbished” or “previously owned” even if the product was never used. Check Apple.com and Dell.com for refurbished goods for less, too. And note that Best Buy offers an entire category online of open box electronics, which are reduced up to 40% off the ticketed prices.

What you would typically spend: $499.00 for a new iPad

Total savings: $70.00 when purchased refurbished
