Can Lifting Your Arms Cause Damage to an Unborn?
Is it true that if pregnant women lift their arms above their head, the umbilical cord can get wrapped around the baby's head?
The belief used to be that if you lifted your arms overhead during exercise, the movement would increase the chances of the cord ending up around the baby's neck. This has not been found to be the case in any study. Do, however, use caution when lifting your arms for long periods of time. Prolonged arm elevation may cause the blood to drain from your arms into the rest of your body, and because blood pressure in pregnancy is normally low, your arms may tingle or fatigue sooner, which could be uncomfortable. If you have any discomfort in your arms, or feel lightheaded or dizzy, discontinue the exercise
