Tell the Truth Steve Carell: Are You the Overprotective Type?

The iVillage Guest Editor comes clean about how uptight -- or laid back -- he is when it comes to raising his kids

I had this image of Steve Carell approaching the dating years (his daughter just turned 12). Can you imagine him subjecting potential suitors to a waxing like his character experienced in that unforgettable and painful-to-watch scene in 40-Year-Old Virgin? If the suitor were brave enough to have his hair ripped off his body, well, then he could date his daughter.

Thankfully, for Steve’s daughter’s sake, the 50-year-old father of two has no such plan in mind and says he's relatively “laid back” about the whole dating thing. “I don’t want to be that weird dad,” Steve told me during a wide-ranging interview at a Hollywood sound stage as part of his Guest Editor role for iVillage. “I don’t want to be that guy who is overly sizing up every suitor that she has. ... That seems like such a cliche to me,” he added. “I may end up being that guy but I hope I’m not.”

Don’t worry, Steve. We don’t think you’ll end up being “that guy.”

Who’s the Disciplinarian in the Carell Household?

He may be easy-going with his kids but he’s no pushover. Ask who’s the disciplinarian in the household, and Steve says he and his wife Nancy, a comedian and writer, are “fairly equal" in the keeping-the-kids-in-line department. “I think my wife and I have a united front in terms of discipline. Sometimes we get our signals crossed and kids look for that,” he added.

Oh do they ever! We can relate.

“Kids are so ready to play one parent against the other,” Steve, who's next movie is Despicable Me 2 coming in July, said with a laugh (his son is 8). “You know, ‘May I have a cookie?' 'No.’ And then they walk out of the room. Where did they go? Are they perhaps checking with mom to see whether a cookie is in the offing? It’s like, and you quickly have to say, ‘Don’t let them, don’t let them do it.'”

Don’t your kids do the same thing? Kids are so smart, I say to Steve Carell (we’re best buds at this point in the interview!), and he wholeheartedly agrees!

Want to hear more from the darling dad about parenting, including the best advice he got from his dad, whether he considers himself a “hot” dad and why Ryan Gosling wishes Steve were his dad? You are in luck. Stick around all week as Steve opens up and leaves us loving him even more.
