What was Carrie Bradshaw like before she lived in the city or had sex? That's the question answered by author Candace Bushnell in her new young adult novel, The Carrie Diaries. A prequel to Sex and the City, it follows young Carrie -- an awkward seventeen-year-old with a bad complexion and dreams of moving to New York City -- as she navigates friends, virginity and college applications in smalltown Connecticut. (You can read an excerpt here.) Although Bushnell admits that "there aren't any plans at this moment" for the book to become its own film or TV series, she also notes that every single one of her books has been optioned by Hollywood -- meaning, it's pretty likely.
One person who'd love to see the new book brought to life: Sarah Jessica Parker. And she knows exactly who should play teen Carrie. "Maybe they should use old footage of me!" Parker, 45, suggested to E! on Wednesday. "And in this new age of Avatar, what about a new 17-year-old S.J.?"
While the Sex and the City ladies have worn some extreme outfits in the name of beauty, an Avatar-style digital makeover might be pushing it! Footage of an awkward-looking teen version of SJP does exist, however -- her bespectacled character on the '80s series Square Pegs actually fits Bushnell's description pretty well.
Even if Parker somehow did play teen Carrie, we have trouble picturing Bradshaw in a world without her best girlfriends. The Carrie Diaries solves that problem by introducing three teen BFFs: Lali, Maggie and Roberta. Which one is the Samantha, who's the Miranda and who's the Charlotte? According to a rave review in the Los Angeles Times, guessing is part of the fun. Bushnell is already working on The Carrie Diaries 2 -- but we may just have to hold out for The Samantha Diaries. We have a hunch that her teen years were much more juicy.
