"When I was about 24, I had a doctor tell me I was hypomanic," says Carrie Fisher. "He said I should go on lithium. I didn't believe him. I thought he was trying to get rid of me." The actress, who shot to international stardom as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars, continued living with manic depression until she overdosed at 28 and another doctor again diagnosed her with the condition. In her book Wishful Drinking, Fisher discusses alcoholism, drug addiction and mental breakdown -- and even details how she tried electroshock therapy for her depression. Her very public life has often been a roller coaster, but Fisher has been a successful writer and actress, recently in the movie The Women and HBO’s Entourage.
