Lions and tigers and Carrie Underwood, oh my!
The American Idol winner's new music video for "Blown Away" has arrived, and it takes us back to a troubled home life in
Kansas Oklahoma. The powerful song tells the story of a smart woman stuck living with her angry alcoholic father, but wanting to put those difficult times behind her. The song's music video tells a more familiar story, though... specifically one of a girl named Dorothy and her ruby red slippers. Watch it below!
"When you hear about tornadoes in movies, you think of something very visual that we've all seen in our lives -- you think of Wizard of Oz," Underwood told E!, which debuted the video. "It's all about bringing that into this year, into this album, into 'Blown Away.'"
Considering that was her goal, Underwood, 29, did a great job. There are plenty of nods to the movie adaptation of L. Frank Baum's classic story, from Underwood's plaid shirt and red boots to her puppy companion and the journey down the yellow brick road. And, to Underwood, the dark currents that run underneath The Wizard of Oz's shiny, colorful surface were also important.
"I wanted it to be fierce. I wanted it to be strong. I wanted it to be beautiful and sexy," she told E! of the video. "To me, in the story of the song, there was love there. There was a mom, there was a house, there was a family, and that all fell apart."
