When the 2010 Emmy nominations are announced on Thursday morning, a certain Facebook group will be paying close attention to the Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality - Competition Program category. Who's the group? The Campaign for a 2010 Emmy Nomination (and Win) for Cat Deeley.
The perky host of Fox's So You Think You Can Dance (Wednesday, 8 p.m. ET) has never scored an Emmy nod, and, dang it, this 245-member Facebook group would like to see that rectified!
Honestly, I find this perplexing. The first time I tuned into SYTYCD, I was downright confused by this apparent lingerie model who was welcoming me to the show. Who was this Cat Deeley person? Was she a famous dancer I didn't know about? A former famous dancer? What was her connection here? (After all, Ryan Seacrest presumably landed his American Idol gig based on his background as a radio deejay.)
And why the British accent? Was SYTYCD a British show first -- and they brought over their host for the American version? All these questions ran through my head.
Actually, Deeley is simply a photogenic hostess (who happens to be British) hired to chat with the contestants between the show's dancing bits. The 33-year-old Brit began her career as a model, then switched to "hosting" and "presenting" on British TV shows. In 2006, she moved to Hollywood and took up the SYTYCD hosting gig. Outside of the show, she's still practically unknown in the U.S. -- though she has subbed for Meredith Vieira on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and for Kelly Ripa on Live with Regis and Kelly. And she has snagged some tabloid attention for her relationship with actor Jack Huston -- who just had a small role in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.
But among SYTYCD fans, Deeley is truly beloved. Last year, when the Emmy nominating committee passed her over -- and Entertainment Weekly pointed out the snub -- scores of readers made comments like this one: "She is nice and silly and really cares about the dancers. She should totally have gotten an Emmy nomination!"
Since ratings for SYTYCD have been steadily declining, Deeley probably shouldn't be holding her breath. Of course, if the show ever gets canceled, there's always another Facebook group. Maybe a Campaign To Get Cat Deeley a New Gig?
Do you think Cat Deeley should get an Emmy nod?
