Before you put all those holiday catalogs into the recycling bin, pull out a few of the more colorful ones for some creative kid fun!
Challenge kids to do some "descriptive drawing." Provide them with paper and crayons or markers. Find a picture in a catalog that will be easy to describe, for instance, "I see two girls sitting on the green grass. One is wearing a red dress. The other is wearing a green top and blue jeans. They are playing checkers." Add as many details as you can without showing them the picture. When kids are done drawing, compare their art to the original.
Give kids a pile of fashion catalogs and tell them to cut out some of their favorite separates. Then challenge them to create new outfits by rearranging the shirts, skirts, shoes, etc. If desired, they can glue the new outfits on blank paper.
Have a catalog scavenger hunt. An adult can scan a fashion catalog in advance and make a list of various items to search for, or make a simple list of basic items, such as "blue jeans," "red top" or "leather shoes." This can be played by one kid or many, each using their own catalog.
Cut out a favorite photo from a catalog, mount on cardboard, then cut into pieces to make a handmade jigsaw puzzle. Then try to put it back together!
With a big pile of old catalogs, scissors, glue and blank paper, challenge kids to create a themed collage based on a single color or object.
