Catherine Zeta-Jones has had a difficult couple of years struggling with serious health crises in her family.
The Rock of Ages star reveals how she and husband Michael Douglas have dealt with his throat cancer, which the Oscar-winning actor announced in August 2010; their 11-year-old son Dylan's "special needs"; and her own battle with bipolar disorder.
"It puts everything into perspective on a personal and professional level. I'm not so consumed about what people think or say like I used to be," Zeta-Jones, 42, told Britain's Stylist magazine.
Although she says her family is in a "much better place now," the actress admits that she has cut down her schedule to concentrate on her family's health.
"This is life; this is it. And we feel very blessed with our health and everything. And we just enjoy it. Michael's the same."
Zeta-Jones says she and Douglas, 67, marvel at how much they've had to overcome.
"But these things are sent to try us, and we do sit back and go, 'Wow, we got through that,' and, 'Oof, we dodged that huge bullet.' I guess it does make you stronger because you have some ammunition to be prepared for something else that's going to side swipe you, because it really did side swipe us," she said.
And Zeta-Jones keeps a positive outlook on their future together.
"I'm in a much better place now," she added. "Things are going great and long may they continue because it's been a tough road."
