Millions of people realized this, including many celebrities -- and they weren't shy about sharing how the legend inspired them. They quickly took to Twitter in honor of the freedom fighter and voiced how much he meant to them and the world.

Most poetic, perhaps, is Mandela's own thoughts about passing away: "Death is something inevitable," he once said. "When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore, why I will sleep for the eternity."
Rest in perfect peace, Madiba. With the legacy you've left behind, you can never truly die.
