The First Ladies

An appearance on the beloved children’s show is now as customary for a first lady as a state arrival ceremony. In its 41-year history, Sesame Street has welcomed four: Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush and Michelle Obama. Both Barbara and Laura Bush sat and read books aloud — the former chose Ezra Jack Keats’ book Peter’s Chair, while the latter read a book created especially for the segment titled “Wubba, Wubba, Woo!” Mrs. Clinton’s and Mrs. Obama’s segments coincidentally focused on healthy living and eating habits.
