The 2013 Emmy Awards turned out to be a night full of surprise winners, heartfelt tributes and... lots of stars hanging with their BFFs!
Claire Danes and Lena Dunham
So Claire Danes and Lena Dunham are besties. How did we not know this?!
Tonight we learned:
1. The Homeland star and Girls creator both grew up in New York City and met through a mutual friend.
2. The love between these two A-list BFFs makes Ryan Seacrest feel awkward.
3. Our new mission in life is getting invited on Danes-Dunham brunch dates. (We imagine the conversation is witty and adorably self-conscious.)
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler
If you weren't familiar with their shared comedy history, you might think Amy Poehler and Tina Fey had hit a bar (or seven) before slipping into the front row tonight. They certainly made themselves comfortable!
Zooey Deschanel and Emily Deschanel
Sisters Zooey and Emily Deschanel (who each star in a Fox series: New Girl and Bones, respectively) had the fashion police on high alert when they strode on stage together in very different, icy blue gowns (one by J Mendel and one by Houghton). Who won the style showdown? Who cares?! Here's the better question: Which one got Sir Elton John's attention backstage?
Kerry Washington and Diahann Carroll
Kerry Washington and her hero Diahann Carroll, who play mother and daughter on ABC's Scandal, held hands as they strode to the podium together. Washington reminded the audience that Carroll was the first African-American to be nominated for an Emmy. And Carroll had some nice things to say about her best actress-nominated friend in return: "She's brilliantly talented, she's very lovely, and tonight she'd better get this award!" (Claire Danes ended up taking home the Emmy.)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale
As for Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale, both winners for Veep, this friendship might be a little... codependent. But Louis-Dreyfus' acceptance speech was one of the best of the night because of it!
Hey, who wouldn't want a friend who carries your purse around and whispers helpful hints during the most important moments in your life?
