Angelina Jolie

When Angelina Jolie learned she carried the BRCA1 gene -- the so-called breast cancer gene -- and was at a high risk of developing breast cancer, she decided to fight the disease before it began. Jolie revealed that her mother’s death from ovarian cancer at age 56, and her desire to stay healthy for her six children made her choice to have a double mastectomy in February of 2013, at age 37, easy. Jolie shared her personal experience in an Op-Ed in The New York Times, hoping to encourage other women to stop breast cancer before it starts. Jolie wrote: “Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.”
