Celeb Costume Roundup: The Good, The Bad and The Lazy!

From the funniest costume to the most topical to the most offensive, get our take on the stars' Halloween ensembles

It's always fun to see celebrities go all-out for Halloween. Though the storm interfered with some of the planned festivities (including -- sadly -- Heidi Klum's annual party and New York City's Greenwich Village Halloween Parade), there were plenty of opportunities for celebs to flaunt their costumes.

Here, our picks for the very best and worst of the bunch!

Funniest Costume: The one celeb who made us laugh out loud this year was Ellen DeGeneres, whose outrageous Sofia Vergara costume -- complete with Emmys wardrobe malfunction! -- even cracked up Vergara herself.

Best Family Costume:
This was a tough category this year, with Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon doing Goldilocks and the Three Bears with their twins, and Alyson Hannigan and Alexis Denisof heading up the world's cutest dragon family. But we're going have to give the award to Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka, whose family Wizard of Oz costume may have actually outdone their Peter Pan outfits from last year.

Most Predictable:
If there's one celebrity pair we'd have liked to see looking a little ridiculous on Halloween, it's Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. But no, Kim went as a sexy Catwoman, with Kanye as her oh-so-expected Dark Knight. Yawn. At least their Splash-themed costumes from earlier in the week showed a tad more ingenuity.

Most Topical:
Gwen Stefani hit the party circuit dressed as Sandy from Grease -- and just to make it clear that she wasn't endorsing Hurricane Sandy, she put a fake bullet-hole in her head.

Most Accurate Impersonation:
's Chord Overstreet nabs this one with his dead-on version of Brad Pitt from those weird Chanel No. 5 commercials.

Best Family Homage:
We love Emma Roberts going as her aunt Julia Roberts's breakthrough character, Vivian from Pretty Woman. Obviously, she chose the costume Vivian wore when she was still working the streets as a prostitute. When else could she get away with that outfit?

Best Nostalgia Costume:
Raising Hope
star Shannon Woodward teamed up with Katy Perry to become Daria and Jane, the sardonic teenage BFFs from the '90s MTV cartoon Daria. We like, love it.

Most Offensive:
We are shocked, shocked that Chris Brown is taking this category. No, he didn't dress as a woman-beater. (He covered that territory with his shocking neck tattoo!) But he did rope his whole entourage into dressing as an Al Qaeda terrorist cell. So, that's classy.

Best DIY Costume:
Most celebs outsource their costumes to fancy rental places or designers, so we have to give Chris Colfer props for sporting very creative ensembles that appear to be entirely homemade. He tweeted two costume pics this year: a llama-turned-assassin ("The Llaminator"), and a guillotine (complete with severed head of Marie Antoinette).

Paris Hilton
claimed she was dressed as Honey Boo Boo, but it really looks like she just pulled out a frilly dress and tiara from her closet. A bottle of go-go juice or a plate of "sketti" would have made a world of difference!

Best Last-Minute Costume:
Comedian Patton Oswalt dressed as Doctor Octopus to his daughter's Spider-Man, and he solicited the help of Mythbusters's Adam Savage to make it happen. Savage constructed an awesome trick-or-treating costume for Oswalt in just four hours; you can see how he did it in the video below.

Biggest Head-Scratcher:
Avril Lavigne
's ex-husband Deryck Whibley dressed as Avril for Halloween, and had his girlfriend play Avril's current fiance Chad Kroeger. Was it a compliment? A diss? We have no idea!
