Michael Phelps

After being diagnosed with ADHD at age 9, the Olympic gold medalist began taking Ritalin to try to control it. But it turned out the best treatment was something he’d later become a legend for: swimming. In 2008, his mother Deborah told Good Housekeeping that the sport helped her son “develop good time management” and that “even if Michael’s mind was all over the place, he could focus on going up and down the pool. Plus, water itself has a calming, soothing effect.” She credits his single-minded passion to excel as an athlete with helping him manage the disability. “It’s not just swimming that helped Michael; it was finding his passion and channeling his energy in that direction.”
