Celebs & Real Moms Dish on "What My Mom Taught Me"

It goes without saying that Mother's Day is one of our favorite days of the year. In addition to the flowers, breakfasts in bed, sweet trinkets and hugs that are given out and received, the day also provides us a reason to stop our hectic lives for a moment and think about how our own moms have made us into the women we are today. Last year, we did something casually around the office. We took some photos of ourselves holding up signs explaining one lesson that our moms taught us. The idea caught on and this year we decided to expand it. We asked celebrities, chefs, style experts, home designers, health gurus, and members of our iVillage community to tell us: What did your mom teach you?

The responses we gathered are nothing short of inspiring, from sweet to funny to tear-jerking to wise. Click through the below galleries to see our celebration of motherly wisdom.

What My Mom Taught Me: Celebrities Dish!
"Be happy. That's the best thing you can tell your kids. Be happy -- if not get drunk, and then you'll really be happy." -- Kate Hudson, actress

What My Mom Taught Me: Celebrity Chefs
“[My mom taught me] the idea that food can connect generations and remind us where we come from. And that food can be adventurous. My mom would put on Spanish music and we’d have Spanish food. Or we’d be reading a story in French and shed make French food for dinner. Food is so magical for kids.” – Rachael Ray, chef

What My Mom Taught Me: Celebrity Beauty Tips
“My mom always used Oil of Olay moisturizing cream. I totally use that too.” –Megan Hilty, actress/start of NBC’s Smash

What My Mom Taught Me: About Being a Parent
"I cannot even begin to count the things my mother taught me about being a parent. She taught me that parenting is always being there for the people you love. Words cannot express the ways she has supported me through anything I have tried to achieve or anything I have had to endure. I have lots of great friends, but none have stood by me like my mom." – Gina, real mom

What My Mom Taught Me: Health & Fitness Gurus
“My mother is a very diplomatic woman who could hear all sides of an issue and offer solutions that comforted everyone. I would always tire my mother out so she would frequently plead with me to have the patience of Buddha. I learned more about speaking to patients from my mother than from medical school.” – Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of The Dr. Oz Show

What My Mom Taught Me: Celebrity Home Designers
“My mom helped me to understand that a home should serve the people who live there, and not just be beautiful to live in, but comfortable, and flexible and a place everybody in the family can relax and enjoy.” – Robert Novogratz, hosts of HGTV’s Home by Novogratz
