Celebs Say The Darned Stupidist Things!
For those of you who exist in a vacuum and have failed to connect with a television, radio, computer, newspaper, magazine, text messaging device, Facebook account or town crier in the past few days, here’s the scoop: Kate Moss, she of the wide-eyed, slim-bodied vacant stare (you may also remember her from that silly little cocaine incident in 2005) , has made headlines again, this time for uttering seven teeny tiny words that have now been screamed the world over:
“Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.” The universe rebelled against her quip, and despite the fact she is hardly the first person to utter the sentiment (I feel like I remember seeing this phrase embroidered on needlepoint pillows made by my childhood friends’ moms), everyone certainly seems to hope she’ll be the last. It’s been heatedly blogged and Tweeted, the morning news shows have covered it with experts and real women expressing rage and scorn. But here’s the thing: Is anyone really surprised? I mean, this is Kate Moss. She gave birth to the phrase “heroin chic.” She posed in the nude for Calvin Klein, her ribs and tush both plainly visible. When you Google "kate Moss and cocaine," 301,000 sites pop up in 0.22 seconds. What else would we expect to hear from a woman who has made millions off of being thin?
Maybe the brouhaha has my stupid celeb quote radar up, but just after the Moss frenzy erupted, I read this nugget in US Weekly: “It may take me the rest of my life, but if I’m 80 and I have abs, I’ll be happy!” – On her trouble area, Carrie Underwood. (Note: Her “trouble area” looks like this.) Ooh – how about this one:
[When asked about magazines increasingly using real women instead of models] "No one wants to see curvy women. These are fat mummies sitting with their bags of crisps in front of the television, saying that thin models are ugly.” - Designer Karl Lagerfeld (who lost 92 pounds in a year with his special 1000 calorie/day “Karl Lagerfeld Diet”) "I'm pretty solid, actually. I'm not like 110lb but I'm probably heading towards that." - Kate Hudson in Elle. (Good God, not 110 pounds! Please, I weighed that in fifth grade.)
Did Moss' "skinny" comment make you feel bad?
