Charitable Giving on Hanukkah

Because we celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas, it's particularly important to make sure that the gift-giving doesn't get out of hand and overwhelm the meaning of the two separate holidays. When our kids were still small, we began to designate one night of Hanukkah as a night we give gifts to those in need, instead of receiving gifts. We contributed to Heifer International to fund the purchase of farm animals, and we would give the kids each one small plastic animal to represent the gift of a goat or chicken, to help them imagine the gift they were giving. As they got older, this tradition expanded to several nights when they would choose where to give their Hanukkah donations. -- Susan
