In diverse roles that have included everything from a safe cracker to a modern-day hippie, Charlize Theron's hair has gone from luxuriously long to flapper short, and back again. For her Oscar-nominated role in North Country, the golden mane of this South African-born beauty underwent a shaggy, limp style. But now Theron has reclaimed her stylish tresses with shoulder-caressing curls that make the most of her fine hair. To get flirty curls like Charlize's, follow the advice of master cutter and stylist Antonio Mondragon, artistic director of Chicago's Salon Mor.
Step 1 Dry hair will never be pretty, says Mondragon, so shampooing and conditioning are very important. If you have fine, color-treated hair like Charlize, begin by shampooing with a volumizing shampoo that is formulated with moisturizers and protectants for dyed hair. Follow with a very light conditioning rinse. (Be sure to keep it light, Antonio says, as heavier conditioners can leave a residue on the hair that will make it dull and less light-reflective.)
Step 2 Towel dry hair and massage a volumizing product into the hair roots. Using your fingers, apply a handful of foam all over the hair. Comb through to insure that the product is evenly distributed.
Step 3 Set blow-dryer on medium heat and dry hair while gently finger-combing from your crown to the ends.
Step 4 Once hair is dry, set your inch-and-a-half curling iron on a high setting. Create a two-inch side part, then separate hair into four sections and clip each section up. Beginning at the back of the head and working with one-inch sections of hair, hold the curling iron on the vertical (the way the curls will fall), and wrap the sections of hair in a spiral around the iron. Hold and release, and don't touch the curl. Continue in this manner throughout while working your way to the top of the head.
Step 5 When all curls are set and cool, gently separate with your fingers until desired style is achieved, then place barrette and lightly mist with a finishing spray.
