Screen legend Charlton Heston died on Saturday April 5 at his Beverly Hills home. The Oscar winner "had made an announcement of his Alzheimer's diagnosis in 2002 and had very much retired from public life," a family spokesperson reported to People.com. Heston starred in such Hollywood blockbusters as The Ten Commandments in 1956, and 1959's Ben-Hur, for which he won the Academy Award for best actor. The Heston family paid tribute to the actor saying, "Charlton Heston was seen by the world as larger than life. He was known for his chiseled jaw, broad shoulders and resonating voice, and, of course, for the roles he played. Indeed, he committed himself to every role with passion, and pursued every cause with unmatched enthusiasm and integrity."
