Now that he's become a man, Chaz Bono is ready to be a husband. On his new OWN special Being Chaz, the 42-year-old Dancing with the Stars contestant gave an engagement ring to his girlfriend of more than six years, Jennifer Elia. Watch the special moment below.
Full disclosure: Bono and Elia have actually been engaged for two years, but were putting the wedding on hold until Bono's transgender process was complete. The diamond ring -- presented on the observation deck of Seattle's Space Needle -- symbolizes that the couple is ready to move forward with their life together. But that doesn't make it any less touching, especially since Chaz is so obviously nervous when presenting Jennifer with her "birthday present!"
"Wow. It's gorgeous. Thank you so much. It's stunning. It's huge!" gushed Elia as she put on the ring. Then to lighten the mood, she added, "Heavy s***, man."
"Who would have thought Seattle would be so special?" she later reflected.
Being Chaz, which aired on Sunday, was the follow-up to OWN's Emmy-nominated documentary Becoming Chaz. The first special followed Bono's transition from male to female, and documented how it affected his relationship with both Elia and his family (most notably his mother Cher). The new special followed some of the public reaction to Bono's new celebrity, including the initial backlash to his being on DWTS. In one segment, a tearful Elia worried that someone would try to physically hurt Chaz for putting himself on network TV.
"People feel so angry that Chaz is entering their television," she sobbed. "People who make change get shot... It's not worth doing a show if you're going to get shot. I don't want him to die for a cause."
Fortunately, Bono remained safe throughout the competition -- and hopefully changed a few minds in the process. He and Elia have been through so much in the six years they've been together, much of it documented for the cameras. They've certainly got something special; after all, how many relationships could survive one member changing their gender? Here's wishing the two of them a very happy future. (And we can't wait to see Cher's mother-of-the-groom dress!)
