Blogger Jenn McCormick from A Home in the Making believes do-it-yourself decor is the best way to stay on a budget -- and a great way to experiment with your personal style. Jenn likes to play it safe when purchasing home accessories but lets herself go a little crazy (in a good way!) with colors or details when it comes to DIY. Jenn’s favorite project to date? Her capiz shell pendant knockoff. In stores, these fixtures cost up to $300. She finished her beautiful, statement-making light for $15 and loves that it always gets compliments. See Jenn’s step-by-step instructions here.
For those who feel disaster-prone when it comes to DIY, Jenn shares her top tips: 1. Start small. Spray paint a frame or a chair. It’s a great way to get your feet wet and gain confidence in your abilities.
2. Browse online tutorials. Pretty much every DIY project has been covered either by magazine editors or bloggers. With a little research you can learn what worked for others and, perhaps more importantly, what didn't work.
3. Team up with a friend. It's fun bonding time and you can help each other along the way.
4. Aim higher. Once you've successfully completed a few projects, it’s time to tackle more ambitious DIY decor.
