Since launching her late-night show Chelsea Lately in 2007, Chelsea Handler has established herself as one of the funniest women on TV. Now it's looking like she has a new goal: to be one of the funniest women in the movies.
Handler, 35, has not yet appeared in a major film -- but soon, she'll be starring in two of them. The foul-mouthed comedienne has just signed on to play Reese Witherspoon's best friend in the romantic comedy This Means War. The film will star Witherspoon as a woman who's torn between two CIA agents, played by the equally handsome Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. This past spring, Handler also landed a role in the animation-and-live-action comedy Hop, which stars Russell Brand as an out-of-work Easter bunny.
Handler has written two No.1 bestsellers, made the Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women list, and is the most successful female host in late-night history -- but can she act? She hasn't done much acting outside of short comedy sketches, like her bits at this year's MTV VMAs, or her role in the web series In the Motherhood. She obviously has a talent for zingers, which should serve her well in "funny best friend" roles. But part of the reason we all love Handler's comedy is that she's unafraid to be mean and sarcastic, as long as it's funny. Will audiences still like her when she's rubbing elbows with the same celebrities she cuts down to size every night? And can she pull off sincere emotion if the script calls for it?
