Granted, Burke herself has set that particular piece of gossip on its way. "I have met with the producers of The Bachelorette and I also have met with ABC producers and development executives, just to develop other shows," the dancing pro told E!'s Kristin Dos Santos last week. "I realize that Dancing won't be on air forever. I'm taking this opportunity now to develop shows. I met with different high-powered producers, companies and networks about possibly doing new shows, and The Bachelorette happened to be one of them."
Burke, who's currently Emmitt Smith's partner on DWTS, is under contract with ABC to keep doing the jive, cha-cha and paso doble for several more seasons, according to The New York Post.
"But it would be nice to take a little bit of a break," she told the newspaper. (According to that report, she's also shopping her own reality series.)
Not that she sees starring in The Bachelorette as a career move. "It is more about genuinely wanting to find love," she says. "It sounds crazy, but I'm so married to my work that I rarely meet new people! I'm around the same people all the time, I've been on [DWTS] for nearly a decade."
And, forget being wishy washy about this decision -- Burke is pretty clear about airing her quest for love on The Bachelorette. "If they offer it to me, I would love to do it," she says. Wow, she's already talking like the earnest, doe-eyed vixens that ABC execs hire for this job!
But Melissa Rycroft, a former Bachelorette and Burke's current competitor on DWTS, has offered some sobering advice. "I would say to whoever goes into that role, I don’t think you can necessarily go in and go, I’m going to find my mate, my spouse," she says. "Go in saying, this is a new adventure. If it leads me that way, or if it at least gives me a great new relationship, take that."
Bachelor fans know that Rycroft's wisdom about tempering expectations has been hard earned. After all, she's the woman who won the heart of Bachelor Jason Mesnick in season 13, only to be traded in for her runner-up Molly Malaney during the After the Final Rose special. Jason and Molly eventually got married (with ABC cameras in tow) and are currently expecting a baby.
No one feels sorry Rycroft these days, though. She's married to Texan insurance agent, Tye Strickland, with whom she shares a daughter and a reality show, CMT's Melissa & Tye.
Based on those two happy endings, it seems Burke can't lose. Of course she hopes to be the next Bachelorette! Who wouldn't?
