Christina Aguilera Has Had "Tears and Sadness" Since Her Breakup

"It's impossible to redefine yourself and your life overnight," the singer tells Redbook about the end of her marriage

Breaking up is hard to do. And for Grammy-winning pop star Christina Aguilera, who's going through a heartbreaking divorce, being a celebrity doesn't make it any easier.

"It’s not easy, and there have been a lot of tears and sadness,” the 29-year-old singer told Redbook magazine just days after she announced she was separating from Jordan Bratman, 33, her husband of five years. (The pair filed for divorce on Oct. 14, citing irreconcilable differences.) "It’s impossible to redefine yourself and your life overnight. Thankfully, I have my mom and a small group of close friends who are there for me 24/7 and whom I can trust and depend on. On days when it feels impossible to even get out of bed, much less function as a mother, their support and encouragement have kept me moving forward."

Another thing getting Aguilera through the split is the couple's 2-year-old son Max. "Thankfully, I have Max to keep me on a sane path," she says. "His needs and happiness are my top priorities, and my biggest concern is to protect him and make him feel safe."

Though she was open about her feelings, the star of the upcoming film Burlesque declined to comment on the speculation that infidelity was the cause of her split from Bratman. "Out of respect for my husband, I prefer to keep the specifics private," she says. "Right now, I’m just trying to figure out how to make it through each day."
