The winner of The Voice Season 5 wasn't much of a surprise. As Blake Shelton predicted, the victor turned out to be the season-long frontrunner, Jamaican singer Tessanne Chin -- who was coached by Adam Levine. But producers did have an actual surprise up their sleeves for the finale: A duel performance by Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera. In matching metallic finery and big, peroxide-blonde hair, the pair belted out Gaga's song "Do What U Want" and cozied up together on a couch. (Gaga recorded the song with R. Kelly.) Watch here:
Casual Voice viewers might not have recognized the significance of the duet, but fans of either singer certainly would. In 2008, when Aguilera was promoting a greatest hits album, Lady Gaga had arrived on the music scene like an unstoppable shooting star. An L.A. Times critic apparently ruffled Aguilera's feathers when he asked her whether she had borrowed Gaga's out-of-the-box style.
"This person [Lady Gaga] was just brought to my attention not too long ago," the pint-sized diva replied. "I’m not quite sure who this person is, to be honest. I don’t know if it is a man or a woman. I just wasn’t sure. I really don't spend any time on the Internet, so I guess I live a little under a rock in that respect." She dismissed her once again in Out magazine.
But, well, bygones. After The Voice performance, Aguilera took pains to put the unpleasantness to rest. "This is the first time we've ever met," she said. "When I heard she wanted to collaborate, I said of course! She's such an innovative artist and a risk-taker. And as a fellow female, I have so much respect for that. And I just have to say, guys, she's the most down-to-earth real person I've met. So I love you girl, and you deserve everything you've earned."
And just to be unmistakably clear, Aguilera followed it up with a tweet:
You might credit a maturing process for Aguilera's reconciliatory tone. But it's also true that Gaga is no longer much of a threat: Her album ARTPOP isn't selling well, and poor ticket sales dogged her last tour. Aguilera, meanwhile, just earned her 11th Top 10 hit on the Billboard 100 chart, with her song, "Say Something." And she's certainly the reigning diva of The Voice!
