For pop stars, transitioning into movie musicals is tricky business. It can go very well (Beyonce in Dreamgirls) or very badly (Mariah Carey in Glitter). Christina Aguilera will soon be taking that leap -- in a role that was written specifically for her.
Burlesque, which Aguilera has just started shooting, is the story of a small-town orphan who goes to L.A. to pursue a music career, and ends up working as a burlesque dancer. Though the musical is set in modern times, it's inspired by Bob Fosse's WWII-era film Cabaret. (Although the plot reminds us of a certain other movie musical that shall remain nameless...)
Speaking of Cabaret, the strong supporting cast includes Alan Cumming, who won a Tony for doing that musical on Broadway in 1998. Kristen Bell, who showcased her impressive singing voice in the film Reefer Madness, will also be backing Christina up. Eric Dane, of Grey's Anatomy and dubious-sex-tape fame, will be playing the love interest, and Twilight's Cam Gigandet is also featured. But the movie's real coup is Cher. The Oscar-winning diva hasn't starred in a movie in ten years, and has never (if you can believe it) done a movie musical, but she's signed on to play the ex-dancer owner of the club.
With this much talent involved, we sure hope that Christina has some acting chops. Burlesque will be not only be her film debut, it will also be her acting debut -- aside from music videos, some SNL skits, and of course, The New Mickey Mouse Club.
