Christina Aguilera Still Thinks Women Can Have It All

Ruven Afanador for REDBOOK

Even though she's in the middle of a divorce, Christina Aguilera hasn't wavered in her belief that women can have it all. The pop singer and actress, who appears on the cover of December's Redbook, spoke to the magazine the day after announcing her split from husband of five years Jordan Bratman. Although she kept quiet about the specifics of her relationship, Aguilera, 29, made it clear the divorce wouldn't curb her momentum -- professionally or personally.

"Every woman has the ability or the drive to do it all and have it all," the singer tells the magazine. "Men aren't as strong and capable as we are. We're machines."

To be honest, this isn't the kind of thing we expected to hear from the soon-to-be single mother. Divorce brings plenty of hard-earned lessons, but "women can have it all" isn't usually one of them. Isn't part of growing older making peace with the fact that you can't really have it all?

But that's not how Christina Aguilera sees it, and maybe she's got a point. It seems that separating from her husband is what the actress needed to put her life into focus. In addition to promoting her debut film as an actress, Burlesque, Aguilera is using this opportunity to concentrate on her almost-three-year-old son Max.

"Thankfully, I have Max to keep me on a sane path," says the singer. "His needs and happiness are my top priorities, and my biggest concern is to protect him and make him feel safe."

One person who thinks Aguilera is on the right path is her Burlesque co-star, Cher. The two singer-actresses became close during shooting, with Aguilera turning to Cher for relationship advice -- and impressing her with her maturity.

"I enjoyed being around her a lot," Cher tells Glamour. "She's funny, but she's also kind of shy and guarded. You have to earn her trust. She's a great mom. She works hard at it. It's not easy to put in sixteen-hour days and also be a good mother. It's hard to feel like you're doing any job well. But she did."

Given the evidence, we'd like to contradict Christina Aguilera's statement: maybe women can do it all because we're not machines, and being moms helps us focus on what matters. And we're sure that single Christina has a bright future ahead of her, in more ways than one -- in addition to being a great singer and mom, Cher says that Christina "showed great promise as an actor."
