Christina Aguilera: "Things Were So Unhealthy" with My Ex

The singer explains why she's getting divorced: "When you're unhappy in your marriage, your children are the ones who suffer"

Choosing to get a divorce, particularly when there are children involved, is no easy decision. No one knows that better than singer-actress Christina Aguilera, who spoke with People about how her split from husband Jordan Bratman has affected their 2-year-old son Max.

"When you're unhappy in your marriage, your children are the ones who suffer," Aguilera, 29, tells the magazine. "That's the last thing I wanted for my son."

Still, it was a decision the Burlesque star felt she had to make. "Things were so unhealthy and unhappy for both Jordan and me," she confesses. "I knew I had to end it."

Aguilera's nearly 5-year marriage to Bratman officially came to an end in October. "I really didn't want to hurt Jordan, and I felt torn about splitting our family up," she says.

The Grammy winner may be reflecting on her marriage gone awry, but she wasted no time finding a rebound. Aguilera is currently dating Matthew Rutler, who was a set assistant on Burlesque. And it seems the singer (who spent Thanksgiving with her new man) is already smitten.

"He's the kind of person you could spend hours with on the phone talking to and all of a sudden it's daylight," she says.
