In case you missed it, Christina Applegate named her new baby Sadie Grace. We love the name, and it got us thinking: What other granny-ish girl names should be on our short list? We asked nameberry.com co-founder Linda Rosenkrantz to give us the scoop.
“Old-lady names can be broken into several categories," Rosenkrantz says. "Sadie is a member of what I’d call the Canasta [a rummy-like game] Crowd, which includes Ione Skye’s Goldie, Busy Phillips’s Birdie and Rebecca Gayheart’s Billie. [These are] nicknamey names that haven’t been heard in years."
Want a more serious, no-nonsense granny name? Rosenkrantz likes names like Adele (Molly Ringwald’s daughter), Dorothy, Clara, Cora, Edith, Evelyn, Frances (Amanda Peet’s daughter), Florence and Flora. Or think about what Rosenkrantz calls “lacy nickname” names like Millie, Tillie, Hattie, Letty and Lottie.
Finally, Rosenkrantz says the granny name Ruby is huge now (something we called in our Baby Name Trends of 2011 story) and that Pearl and Opal are about to blow up!
