A Christmas TV Blast From the Past

While much of the planet is looking forward to contemporary Christmas specials this month (JONAS-mas?, iChristmas? How I Met Your Mother Mary?), Cartoon Network’s Boomerang is going decidedly old school. Their holiday lineup -- airing on weekends from 4 to 6 p.m. and culminating in a Christmas Eve/Christmas Day marathon -- will include Yogi's First Christmas, Casper's First Christmas, A Flintstones Christmas Carol, MGM shorts from the 1930s and ’40s, and even more classic holiday specials featuring Popeye the Sailor, Papa Smurf and the Jetsons.

It will also include episodes of The Powerpuff Girls and Johnny Bravo, both of which aired before 2000 (I’ll generously consider that a cutoff for “classic” designation.)

I’ll tape some of this TV time capsule for my children. They may not recognize two-dimensional, hand-drawn animation right away, but if they enjoy Charlie Brown -- which they do -- I think they can appreciate Fred Flintstone. And what’s a secular Christmas for if not sharing timeless traditions…with a DVR and remote control, naturally.
