Chromium picolinate and nursing

My baby is 4 months old and I am having a difficult time losing weight. I just started to take a diet pill named chromium picolinate. I need to know if this will harm my baby? If so, what may I take to lose the weight? (I am watching my diet and exercising, so I need to take something.)

Thank you,

Dear Angela,

Chromium Picolinate is a nutritional supplement, advertised as being effective in controlling appetite and increasing metabolic rate while increasing protein synthesis and retention of muscle. I would not recommend using any diet pills, herbal or otherwise to speed your weight loss while nursing. As far as I know, no studies have been done to determine the safety of these supplements while breastfeeding.

Though it is often tempting to try and lose weight rapidly following the birth of your baby, it is always best for both mom and baby to lose weight more gradually. Rapid weight loss in the mother speeds the release of the contaminants stored in body fat and unnecessarily exposes the baby to these toxins.

A good way to lose weight gradually is to eat a wide variety of whole (not processed) foods, in as close to their natural state as possible. Reduce your consumption of fats and sugars - this alone should reduce your daily caloric intake. Include moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, 5 times a week.

Exercise in combination with healthy eating habits will not only raise your metabolism, thereby aiding your weight loss efforts, but it can also help to improve your mood. People who exercise regularly seem to suffer from less depression. Best of luck in losing weight while breastfeeding!
