Opponents of circumcision are vocal and vehement. They endeavor to change laws to stop insurance reimbursement of a procedure that they feel has no merit and causes harm.
Removal of the foreskin exposes the glans at the top of the penis, causing a toughening of the delicate underlying mucous membrane. The foreskin is rich in nerve endings similar to those in the fingertips and lips. During intercourse, the foreskin is thought to provide a gliding mechanism for the penis while thrusting and may prevent the loss of vaginal secretions. Debate about the actual effect of circumcision on satisfaction and pleasure is still going on. Proponents point to literature that reports longer "staying power" in circumcised men, while opponents quote research that indicates fewer problems with erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation in intact men.
