While there are several variations, a classic Manhattan, made with rye whiskey, has been called "the king of cocktails."
|2 ounces rye whiskey||2 cups ice|
|1/2 ounces sweet vermouth||1 maraschino cherry, for garnish|
|2 dashes Angostura bitters|
Fill mixing shaker half full of ice cubes or crushed ice. Fill cocktail glass with ice and set aside.
Add whiskey and vermouth to mixing shaker and stir well.
Dump ice from cocktail glass.
Strain drink into chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with cherry and serve.
