There's a reason pencil skirts pop up again and again on those “top items every woman should own” lists. They're a perfect choice when you aren't sure how dressed up or down to be, they go with all types of shirts, and they flatter in the right places on nearly any body type. What's not to love?
The most important thing to remember here is fit — you want a well-cut skirt that fits properly, and any money put towards hemming or tucking to get it just right will be well-spent. The ideal fit will lightly hug your curves; you definitely don't want it roomy, but it shouldn't be so tight that you can't sit, bend, and move (and breathe!) with ease. Some pencil skirts are higher-waisted than others; what's crucial is that the fabric doesn't scrunch or pucker in the hip and pelvis area. And while most of these skirts hit at knee-length, there are shorter and longer styles available that follow the straight sleek pencil cut. Wear whichever looks best on your height (oh, and work your favorite pair of heels with this look, for sure!).
I love the forgiving fabric and classic look of this SELE Stretch Belted Pencil Skirt ($15 at The15DollarStore.com), but if you feel like making a colorful splash, the bold-hued Office Party Pencil Skirt (shown; $16.50 at Charlotte Russe) and the Ribbed Jersey Pencil Skirt ($34.48 at ASOS) both give lots of bang for your buck. Going for a more casual style? The Perfect Denim Pencil Skirt ($29.50 at Old Navy) has a laidback, all-American appeal. For dressier occasions (my favorite time to wear these skirts), try the sexy silhouette of the 2b Piping Pencil Skirt ($29.95 at Bebe) or the fun and flirty Ruffle Back Pencil Skirt ($24.99 at Victoria's Secret).
