Clutter is so not sexy, so quickly tidy up all the newspapers or magazines tossed about. Take the already-read materials and junk mail out to the recycling bin, and neatly stack the new ones somewhere out of the way. “If you have nothing but trashy tabloids and romance novels lying about, you’re better off hiding or tossing them as scientists have found that these days men place just as much importance on intelligence as women do when picking a mate,” says Welch. Not that we don’t love a good tabloid, but he doesn’t need to know about your guilty pleasures -- yet. “Also, you don’t want to seem overly contrived, so avoid artfully fanning magazines on a coffee or side table.” Keeping a copy of The Economist visible if you’ve never read it is silly. Be authentic to yourself, but definitely edit how much authenticity you want to leave on display (i.e. shove your bridal magazines way under the bed!).
