While it is true that you have no control over thoughts that come into your mind, you are the gatekeeper of what stays in there. Imagine a wastebasket in your mind, where you put thoughts that are intrusive, draining, stress-inducing, or anxiety-provoking. Too often these negative thoughts clutter our minds, taking up too much space. Some are unhelpful -- those ‘what if’ thoughts create worry, stressing us out. Some are downright harmful -- that name-calling self-talk that trashes and insults you. Now consider an imaginary composting container, a place where, over time, waste turns into something rich and resourceful. This container is always available, has a tight-fitting lid and ample space for whatever thoughts and connected feelings need to be cleared out. Clearing your mind creates space for creative, positive, productive thoughts and ideas. A clearer mind is calmer, more insightful and peaceful. The more you practice this, the easier it becomes and the quicker it works.
