There are only so many "Mama, Mommy, and Me"-type books out there. So until your kid learns to read, you may find yourself changing the dads in some storybooks to moms -- or vice versa -- when you read them aloud. You want your child to feel included and to be able to see herself and her family reflected in the pages of the books. You don't want her to think that everyone has a mom and a dad except for her. Sure, that may not be what the world around her looks like (and she'll learn that soon enough), but at bedtime, when you're snuggled together reading books, you want her to feel safe and special.
