In a town that usually leans to the left, Clueless actress Stacey Dash is proud to go right. Dash has been playing defense on Twitter since Sunday, when she tweeted a message endorsing Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
"Vote for Romney. The only choice for your future. @mittromney @teamromney#mittromney #VOTE #voteromney," Dash tweeted, alongside a picture of herself, rocking a Baywatch-style swimsuit, as a patriotic pin-up.
Immediately, supporters of Barack Obama began criticizing Dash's message. A typical response: "Can someone tell Stacey Dash her role in Clueless is over?" Other Twitter users accused her of voting against her own interests. Said one, "You're an unemployed black woman endorsing @MittRomney. You're voting against yourself thrice. You poor beautiful idiot." Even rapper Talib Kweli chimed in, calling Dash's support of Romney "hilarious." And those were some of the more polite remarks.
In response, the actress defended her right to choose her own candidate. "My humble opinion... EVERYONE is entitled to one," she tweeted. She also retweeted a message from Romney's official account, saying, "Women have had enough of @BarackObama’s disappointment. We need new leadership to get our economy growing again."
Dash, who recently reunited with her Clueless costars for the film's 17th anniversary, will continue to defend her Romney endorsement during a Tuesday appearance on CNN's Piers Morgan Tonight. And she has at least one surprising defender: Democratic women's rights activist Sandra Fluke.
"So disappointed to see people attacking@REALStaceyDash for voicing her opinion," Fluke wrote on Monday. "Disagree politically, but #racist attacks are unacceptable."
