Colace for constipation during pregnancy?

I am 21 weeks pregnant and suffering from constipation. My doctor told me to get docusate sodium and take one twice daily. I have been doing that but am worried about possible effects on my baby. How long should I rely on them before my change of diet kicks in?

I can understand your concern about taking any drug during pregnancy. Colace (docusate sodium), according to Briggs' Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation, has never been shown to cause any congenital defects, despite its rather broad use even during pregnancy.

I would imagine that one to two weeks would be sufficient before the diet changes take effect.

I hope this resolves and you have a more comfortable pregnancy.
