Reporting Problems
If someone is bothering you, use the "Ignore" option and you will no longer see that user's messages.
To report a problem or possible violation of our Terms of Service, click on the "Help" button above the list of names on the chat screen. In the "Help" popup, you'll find a link to the "Chat Violation Report." To get help with a technical problem, email chathelp@mail.ivillage.com.
Ignore
If another chatter's comments bother you, you can choose to ignore that chatter's messages. To ignore another user, right click on the member name in the list on the right side of your chat screen, and then select "Ignore." You will no longer see messages from this user. To stop ignoring any user, right click on the user's member name and select "Unignore." Ignored members will appear in the user list with their names crossed out.
Profiles
You can view another member's profile by right clicking on the member name in the list of names on the right of the screen, and then selecting "Launch Profile." This user's profile will open in a new browser window.
Private Message
Private messages are visible only to the sender and the recipient. To send a private message to another member, right click on the member's name, and then select "Private Message." This will open up a smaller chat window for a private conversation. To end the conversation, just close the window.

To send your message, enter your text into the chat window, then click the "Whisper" button, located under the emoticon bar. This message is seen only by the person you've selected, but it will appear in the main chat window.
Emoticons
To add a fun emoticon to your chat message, click on one of the faces to the right of the chat screen and click "Send."
If you are having trouble getting into iVillage chatrooms, the most common solution is to upgrade your browser to the most current version.
The current version of Internet Explorer is 6.02. These current versions contain the most recent versions of Java, which is essential for chatting in PChat2, java version.
If you're having trouble getting into chat, please try the following steps:
- Clear out your temporary Internet files.
- Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced. Make sure you have all three of the Java boxes checked. (Called VM, or Virtual Machine.)
- If you have a firewall, make sure that port 23 is open.
- Make sure you don't have any pop up stoppers enabled.
- Upgrade your browser version.
- Upgrade Java directly from Sun.
Try entering a chat room after each of these steps.
Java needs at least 16 mg of RAM to run, and the minimum IE version needed to run it is 4.01. Virtual Machine (VM) build should be 3802 or greater. Some users have said that downloading the most current version of Java has solved the problems they were experiencing getting into chat. To download the most current version of Java, go to the Sun Java site to download. See also this article from Sun on JVM and this download page for manual and automatic downloads.
