Concerns over working part-time while pregnant

I miscarried in may 1996, I am now pregnant again. My questions is: Will working a part time second job affect my pregnancy?

Dear Latanya,

There has been some recent research which points to the increased risk of preterm labor with strenuous labor and long hours. But if you have no other risk factors for preterm labor such as bleeding or previous preterm labor (not miscarriage unless it was after the first trimester), and you are not lifting and doing strenuous activity, then it is up to the individual whether or not the benefit outweighs the perhaps slightly higher risk.

I would recommend frequent breaks with your legs elevated, don't miss out on any meals and nutritious snacking. Hopefully your work is not strenuous and you are not being exposed to environmental hazards. You need to stay away from smoke also. If you do work two jobs and then must come home and manage the house and family activities, you are really working three jobs. It just depends on your own situation and how your body and mind can adjust.

Some mothers do really need to work two jobs to relieve the stress of financial burdens which would also put a stress on the marriage and pregnancy. Just use your own best judgement.

Good luck,
