This stiff dough, rather like a sugar cookie, bakes up into eerie white bones that are delicious to eat. Kids love to roll and shape the bones. Be careful not to overbake them so they stay white, not golden-brown. Jumble them together on a plate for a scary party snack.
Recipe from "Ghoulish Goodies" by Sharon Bowers/Storey Publishing.
| 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened | 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract | |
| 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar | 1/8 teaspoon almond extract (optional) | |
| 1/4 cup sugar | 1/2 teaspoon salt | |
| 1 egg | 1 1/3 cup flour |
Cream the butter with the confectioners’ and granulated sugars until fluffy. Beat in the egg, vanilla, almond extract and salt. Blend in the flour. Chill the dough for 20 minutes to firm it up.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove half the dough from the fridge and divide it into 12 lumps. Working quickly, roll each lump between your palms to form a “bone” about 4 inches long. Lay it on a baking sheet and lightly squeeze the ends to dent the sides a bit and give each bone some definition.
Bake 8 to 10 minutes, until just firm, not wet-looking and not at all brown on the tops. (The best way to tell if they’re done is to trust your nose: If you begin to smell “cookie” in the air, remove them from the oven!) Cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
