Cook the Apples

To cook in a slow cooker:
Add the sliced fruit to a slow cooker with a 4-quart or larger capacity, and stir in 1 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice or cloves to coat the fruit evenly. Place the lid on the slow cooker and set it to cook on low for 10 hours.

To cook in the oven or on the stovetop:
If cooking in the oven, preheat the oven to 350. Add the fruit to a 3 1/2 quart Dutch oven or other high-sided, oven-safe lidded stockpot. Stir in 1 cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice or cloves to coat the fruit evenly. Cover and cook in the oven or on the stove over medium heat for 1 to 2 hours, until the fruit is very soft and simmering in its natural juices.
