How to Add Flavor

  • Non-fat cooking spray now comes in different flavors. Use olive oil for sauteeing and butter-flavor for baking pans.
  • Toasting nuts and spices intensifies their flavor. Add nuts to salads and use spices as a low-fat flavoring for stir-fries, soups and stews.

Preparation

  • An easy way to peel garlic: Mash it with the flat side of a kitchen knife to loosen the skin.

Selection

  • When buying garlic, be sure to look for heads that are firm and free of brown spots, sprouting or any green cores within the cloves.
  • When choosing ginger, make sure it is hard, unwrinkled and free of mold. Store in the fridge up to a week in a paper towel and plastic wrap.

Storage

  • Store garlic at room temperature and not in the refrigerator.
  • You can freeze fresh herbs. Just snip off leaves, wash, pat dry and freeze in freezer bags. It's a great way to get fresh taste all year 'round.
  • Store fresh parsley in a glass of water in the refrigerator to maximize freshness.
